Youth Ocean Carnival

Members of the SSC joined with over 600 students at Luna Park last week to attend the first annual Youth Ocean Carnival for World Environment Day today and World Ocean Day on Saturday.

They heard from leading changemakers, artists, scientists and advocates about the sustainable innovations to help our planet, including robots to build and clean coral, living sea walls and the 30 by 30 goal to designate 30% of Earth's land and ocean area as protected areas by 2030.

They also participated in workshops, planning proposals for sustainability initiatives for our school.

Some interesting facts we learned:

  • Every second breath of oxygen we take is produced by the ocean. The ocean is the heart of our planet.
  • Sea levels are rising by 3.4mm a year.
  • Australia has the most extinct mammal species in the world.
